We are a Toronto-based educational organization dedicated to providing structured, neutral, and comprehensive learning experiences about crowdfunding ecosystems in Canada.

Maple Learning Inc. was established in 2017 in Toronto, Ontario, by a group of educators and researchers who recognized a growing gap in public understanding of crowdfunding mechanics. As crowdfunding platforms gained popularity across Canada, many participants were entering the ecosystem without foundational knowledge about how campaigns function, what risks exist, or how Canadian regulations shape the crowdfunding landscape.
Our founders, drawing from backgrounds in business education, public policy, and digital communications at institutions including the University of Toronto and Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University), set out to create a structured educational resource that would fill this knowledge gap. The goal was never to promote crowdfunding as a financial strategy but rather to equip learners with the critical thinking tools necessary to understand this evolving part of the digital economy.
Since our founding, we have served over 3,200 students from across Canada, including business students, nonprofit professionals, policy analysts, journalists, and curious members of the public. Our commitment to neutrality, academic rigor, and accessibility has remained constant throughout our growth. Every module we create undergoes peer review by subject matter experts before publication, ensuring accuracy and educational value.
Everything we do is guided by a clear mission and a forward-looking vision for crowdfunding education in Canada.
To provide accessible, academically rigorous, and neutral educational resources that enable Canadians to develop a thorough understanding of crowdfunding ecosystems. We believe that informed participation begins with structured learning, and our mission is to deliver that learning in a format that respects the intelligence and autonomy of every student.
We achieve this through carefully designed online courses, live webinar sessions with guest educators, and supplementary training materials that cover every dimension of crowdfunding, from campaign structure and participant roles to regulatory frameworks and risk awareness. Our educational approach emphasizes critical analysis over promotion, ensuring that students leave our programs with a balanced and well-informed perspective.
We envision a Canada where every person who interacts with the crowdfunding ecosystem, whether as a creator, contributor, or observer, possesses the foundational knowledge to engage thoughtfully and responsibly. We see crowdfunding education as a natural extension of broader financial literacy efforts, and we aspire to contribute meaningfully to that national conversation.
Looking ahead, we aim to expand our curriculum to address emerging developments in digital finance, including the intersection of crowdfunding with blockchain technology, social enterprise funding, and evolving Canadian securities regulations. Our vision includes partnerships with Canadian post-secondary institutions to integrate crowdfunding literacy into business, communications, and public policy programs.
Six principles guide every course we design, every webinar we host, and every interaction we have with our learning community.
We maintain strict neutrality in all educational content. Our courses present crowdfunding concepts, mechanisms, and case studies without advocating for or against participation in any specific platform, campaign type, or funding model. Students receive balanced information that empowers them to form their own conclusions based on evidence and analysis.
Every module in our curriculum is developed by experienced educators and reviewed by subject matter experts. We source information from peer-reviewed academic research, government publications, and verified industry data. Our commitment to accuracy means we regularly update course materials to reflect changes in Canadian regulations and market conditions.
We are open about our business model, our revenue sources, and the limitations of our educational offerings. When we include affiliate links to educational tools, we disclose them clearly. We never disguise commercial relationships or present sponsored content as independent editorial material. Our students always know exactly what they are getting.
Learning should be available to everyone regardless of their background or prior knowledge. We design our courses for a broad audience, using clear language and structured lesson formats that accommodate different learning styles. Our self-paced delivery model allows students across Canadian time zones to learn on their own schedules.
Unlike platforms that may downplay challenges, we dedicate substantial curriculum time to discussing the real risks, failures, and limitations associated with crowdfunding. We believe that honest education about what can go wrong is just as important as explaining how things work when they go well. Our risk awareness modules are among our most valued content.
While we reference international crowdfunding developments for context, our primary focus is the Canadian landscape. From provincial securities commission rulings to CRA tax considerations for campaign funds, our content addresses the specific regulatory, cultural, and economic factors that shape crowdfunding in Canada. Our students gain knowledge that is directly relevant to their context.
Our courses are developed and delivered by a dedicated team of educators, researchers, and industry observers with deep expertise in digital finance, public policy, and communications.
Dr. Wu holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management. Her research focused on alternative financing models in the Canadian startup ecosystem. She has published over 15 peer-reviewed papers on crowdfunding dynamics and serves as the primary architect of our curriculum structure.
Marcus spent eight years working in policy development with the Ontario Securities Commission before joining Maple Learning. His expertise in Canadian securities law and crowdfunding exemption frameworks informs our regulatory education modules. He holds an LLM from Osgoode Hall Law School and regularly updates our content to reflect regulatory changes.
Priya brings 12 years of experience in digital marketing and communications education. Previously a lecturer at Toronto Metropolitan University, she developed our modules on campaign communication strategies, media production, and audience engagement. Priya also hosts our monthly educational webinar series featuring guest speakers from across Canada.
James is a CFA charterholder with a background in financial risk assessment. He previously worked as a research analyst at a Toronto-based financial services firm. At Maple Learning, he develops our risk awareness curriculum, case study analysis materials, and assessment frameworks. His expertise ensures our students understand the full spectrum of crowdfunding outcomes.
Our pedagogical approach is grounded in constructivist learning theory, which holds that students learn most effectively when they actively construct knowledge through engagement with material rather than passively receiving information. This means our courses feature extensive case study analysis, reflective exercises, and scenario-based assessments alongside traditional lectures and readings.
We structure content using a scaffolded learning model, where each module builds upon the knowledge established in previous sections. Foundational concepts like crowdfunding definitions, historical context, and ecosystem mapping are introduced first, followed by progressively more complex topics such as regulatory analysis, risk evaluation, and cross-jurisdictional comparisons. This approach ensures that students develop a coherent and layered understanding.
Assessment in our courses goes beyond multiple-choice testing. Students engage with written analysis tasks, evaluate real campaign case studies, participate in structured discussion forums, and complete a capstone project that synthesizes their learning across all modules. We provide detailed feedback on every submitted assignment, supporting each student's growth as a critical thinker and informed observer of the crowdfunding landscape.
